Chapter Eleven

Ruby

“I’m at a loss for what to do,” I admit to Hannah and Hirim over lunch the next day. To avoid being overheard, we chose to have lunch at a nearby Thai place, instead of the break room.

We had a selection of dishes ordered and placed them in the center of the table for sharing. I saw the excessive amount of dishes in front of us and realized that I would have leftover Thai for dinner tonight, which I was okay with.

Hirim suggests that I should leave his team immediately as he waves his chopsticks towards me.

“I’m fully aware,” I say, while rolling my eyes. “Every time I’m alone with Aiden, I can’t seem to stop myself from throwing myself at him. What should I do?”

Hannah and Hirim can’t help but laugh.

“Stop laughing, it’s not funny,” I complain.

“It is, sort of,” Hannah says with food still in her mouth.

“Maybe you just need to get him out of your system,” suggests Hirim.

I have to confess that the idea of sleeping with him is terrifying.

“Why?” both of them ask at the same time.

Between bites, I reveal my prediction. “I have a feeling he’ll be incredible, but I might end up wanting a relationship while he’s only looking for a fling.”

“Probably,” Hannah responds, but Hirim stays silent.

“It seems like he prefers the chase over the catch. He will be done with me and move on to his next victim once I give in to him.”

According to Hannah, she’s never seen him in a relationship in the three years she’s been working here.

I nod enthusiastically. “Yeah, exactly. To my knowledge, he has never been in a committed relationship. He only hooks up with other girls.”

“How did we even get to discussing your relationship with Aiden?” Hannah laughs.

“I don’t even know,” I say, laughing.

“What makes you think he’s only interested in hooking up?” I’m taken aback by this question from Hirim.

I looked at him with a blank expression. I decided not to share the apology messages from Aiden with them, as I sensed it would make them support him over me. I remain silent.

“You should try talking to him and find out what he wants. He might want more than a one-night stand,” Hirim continues.

“I thought you were the biggest Aiden slut shamer of them all?” Hannah turns to him and demands an explanation.

He winces and places his chopsticks down on his plate. “I used to be like that. But that was when I had a huge crush on him, and I hated to hear about him sleeping around with other girls, knowing that he would never sleep with me.”

“What?” we both insist.

With pink cheeks, he clarifies, “There’s nothing wrong with having feelings for someone who can’t return them. I knew he was straight and never acted on my feelings.”

“Why didn’t you ever mention it to us?” Hannah playfully slaps him across his upper arm while scolding him.

“Since you both disliked him, I didn’t want to confess my attraction to him and be seen as a traitor.
